have these last few months been crazy? Well.... YES! only with my work situation, my home life is terrrrrrific.

Anyway. I am decided to focus on my career more, what I want from it, to focus on me more what I want from myself.

I want to create and have fun doing it dammit! Here take another bite of that chocoalte bar darlin'... This blog is so darn old it still has my old last name in the url...

To catch you up, I have published a pattern in the march issue of Soft Dolls & Animals! yay! My big angel girl was published in the June issue of Art Doll Quarterly! big YAY!

And I work at a sewing shop. The owner is retiring and moving to Nevada, far away. So I've decided to rent the building, continue the custom sewing and alterations AND move my doll art studio in to boot! My daughter redesigns dresses and makes the most exquisite jewelry. So together we are going to have a unique little boutique inside our sewing shop.

It Is A Dream coming true for me. My very significant other, Loving Husband, Big is so supportive of this, of me. I truly am where I want and need to be. Girls.... Dreams do come true. But definitely not with the wave of a magic wand. It's that four letter word we all know

A few weeks back, just before Valentine's Day.... it snowed. I just found these pic's on my camera and remembered I was going to share them.... hmmmm...

Well, here they are.

I was out playing in the snow, so were my kitties, mainly Mathilda, she's more like a dog than a cat. Maybe I'll get here to hold still for a photo one day.

Here are the two big sweeties I get to work with every day! Meet Rhett Butler and Ashley Wilkes, they are poodles. I work as a seamstress with one of the best chicks around, you can tell we're busy working all the time. Yes, VERY serious!

What I've been up to is, making some new and fun dolls I'm calling Inspiration Angels. And I re-opened my etsy store.

It's taken me so long to get back to the "work" i love.... Creating art dolls, painting, stitching.... is like the air I breathe... How did I function without breathing for so long?

But you know with out the experiences I've had and the love I've found, or that found me - I wouldn't be creating the style of dolls I am now... And that's from exquisitely detailed and sculpted to the fun little inspiration dolls in the photos above...

It's the same with all artists, and without my online and real life artist friends, my weird ones as we call one another, I wouldn't be the person I am. Thank you dear friends, I love you and You keep me going in this crazy world!

A new year begun. A new family making a new life together here at the Doll House. It's a beautiful and loving thing. Also terrifying stepping foot into waters such as these, but I know and trust in the strength of the love I have found and all will be well... and the weather is warm today!

Always a cheerful thing to find is new life springing into being. Proof of that is in the trees left bare for so many weeks and finding the tiny fuzzy little buds breaking through the bark. Soon the world will be green once more! Until then I work in my studio trying to fill your hearts with cheer and lightness with my wee creations.

Two new tiny fairy girls are visiting us in the Doll Shoppe today and more to come. Nothing but work to do in the sewing room... and I love it. This is the best kind of work I know, creating these little characters to share with you. I hope you enjoy visiting the pages of my virtual doll house and sewing room. Make yourself at home while I rearrange the furniture and stock the bookshelves with wonders and the pantry with comforts... Sit with me for a cup of tea

While at church a couple weeks ago, I noticed my sister friends' bible was worn and well used. An idea popped into my head to make a book cover for her bible, but not knowing how to measure her bible without her looking at me like I had gone over the edge.... I decided to just pick up a new bible for her and make this little angel book cover....

She was happy with her gift and I was happy to have given her a smile.

Yes, I'm here! September 2009 and so many fabulous things have happened in my Doll House!

The most recent is that I met a beautiful soul, we dated, we fell in love, we never want to be apart and we married August 8th. I am so content with my life that I will not give mention to the sad things happening around us. I send those prayers to God and He knows what to do from there...

I'm making new things, and it seems that inspiration has found new venues for me to explore in my artwork. I'm making big paintings, sculpture and dolls of course, so please stay tuned. Thanks for not giving up on me and for those of you ordering sewing patterns, I appreciate the orders! I really do.

I'm seamstress in a local shop where I make clothing alterations, custom outfits and costumes, and teach sewing classes. I still offer the online classes, but the ones i teach live are different patterns all together than the online classes.... come by if you can to check them out! Take care and stop by the website often, I'll be here!

November Happenings:

I haven't forgotten you my darlin's. It's just that our days here at the Doll House have been very, ummm, let's say "topsy turvy". I refuse to bore you with details of the events but I will say that the making of dolls has resumed and I'm getting my groove back! The Groove to create, that is.

There aren't a lot of dolls for sale at the moment, and most of that is because I have to work a real job and also for the fun and experience of it I'm starting to enter my pieces in exhibitions and competitions... Stay tuned for the happenings with that.

I don't know what to say about the classes. There are several classes for dolls and sewing techniques I want to offer in 2009. I've had suggestions sent to me from some interested students. If you have a preference for something you want to learn, let me know 'cause I love to hear from you!

Be sure that if you're in my corner of the world on December 5th, Come see me and my artist friends at Peter's Family Living for the Art Walk!

It's almost June Already! Wow, another month has flown by, but so much has happened... Our gardens are planted, roses are happily in their beds and Fairy Godmother Christine and I are pooped beyond belief! Here I sit in the fairy cottage "office" typing this message to you all because I like to believe someone out there reads it.
New plans this month - I'm planning and building tiny new faerie homes, they will hopefully soon be on display in the windows of the Calico Ladies Studio! So come by often to peek in at us to see the paint, paper and woodchips flying...
Oh and yes, it's our 6 month anniversary of being in our downtown studio, and that means it's SALE time! So that should bring you in at the least! We have all sorts of things for the collector to the artist, or just come in to visit! Oh and we always LOVE to see your projects that you've been creating, bring them in...
I'm so tired from moving from the "Crow Mountain Doll House" to the olde tyme beautiful "Cottage Falls" right in the historical downtown district... but it has been worth it, I'm finding I'm a stronger gal than I even believed... I sure hope you come on by and give me a smile cause I certainly need some happiness these days!!!

First off, I have exciting news for fans of the Doll House! I was called in for a tv show... yes, I get 5 minutes of fame on the Positively Arkansas show on Little Rock's Channel 11 - Station THV. The show that the faeries and I will appear is airing April 1st at 9:30am... Someone tape it for me!
Next on the list is our awning... remember the heavy snows brought down the purple one; we're not to be purple anymore, the owner is adding a new dark red awning to the "front porch" so now you know what to look for on Commerce Ave for the most fantastical place around...
The doll orders are starting to trickle in and I am grateful. Thank you! And remember if you want a special hand made gift for someone special, contact me and I'm happy to work with you.
I have been in awe of the beautiful gardens already in blossom out and around town. My son and I brought a pot or two of pansies to brighten up the front door of the studio until the awning is replaced, and well of course the pansies will stay far after the awning is up... I'm itching to start gardening but am a bit busy with other things at the moment and I suppose I'll have to keep my green thumb to taking care of the two pots of pansies on the doorway of the studio, lol!

Snow storms and new dollies...

I have a new doll to show you, this is my faerie princess, she is approximately 20 inches tall, but her long flowing dress makes her about 30 inches tall... you may see more about her at my website.

Wow, did we have a blast of cold yesterday! The weather people predicted 2 inches of snow... we endind up with about 12 to 15 inches dumped on us! My little shoppe/studio was overloaded with too much heavey snow and the pretty purple awning came crashing down! Thankfully the windows were still in one piece when all was done.... not so lucky the neighboring shop - the beauty college - had their awning come down and break all but two of the windows there...

no photos of the damage, it was just too sad... hopefully the building owner's insurance will help to replace the awning... keeping my fingers crossed!

Well, I'm still creating the dolls in my new studio! It has been an exciting month as well as scary... wasn't sure if money for the rent and utilities were gonna come through! But it did and now I'm working late nights to get new dolls created and more classes in order and ready for teaching at the shoppe.
I'm excited to have gotten a date set for the Shady Ladies, the doll club in Eureka Springs. They're coming at the end of the month to visit the shoppe and it will be so much fun to get to talk with other dollmakers! I'm teaching a mini workshop on wing construction during their visit. I hope they all get to come!
Well, I want you all to come for each class at the shoppe this February! It will be a blast! I'm teaching Art Quilts, How to draw faces on fabric, and elegant patchwork purses... Probably will throw in a doll making class sometime soon too!

Happy New Year! It's so hard to believe it's 2008 already... A big change for us at the doll house is that we have a NEW Doll House! It's a lovely shoppe in historical downtown Russellville Arkansas. I would love to see you all come visit us there too.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

The shoppe has been open for about 4 weeks and everything that has sold has been here on the website. I was able to pay my rent and utilities with those doll sales, Thank you very much!

Now most of the faeries have new homes, but the shoppe looks empty on the studio side... I'm working on new babies, lady faeries and gnomes, so keep an eye out for new residents in the Doll House. So all of you local faerie and fabric lovers, Come on over and chat for a while! We're there from 9am to 6pm most days. We're closed Mondays, but we're usually there anyway, working on new things for you to see...

New to my lines of original dolls are toy faeries for small children to play with and dream with... they are in the creation process, so keep watch, they'll be here soon. I'm adding Fabric batches to the Calico website, come by and purchase a baker's dozen and help our Doll Shoppe stay open! Ode to Raggedy Cat...

This is Raggedy Cat. She came to us about 4 years ago. Hurt, burned ears and whiskers missing. She had bad hips and bowed back legs. Not trusting us at first, then becoming fast friends with some food and love and understanding....

I'm glad to have had those few years to get to have her near. This little package of fur and loud mouth. She'd have an entire conversation with us. We could talk about anything together. She would always listen and always give her two cents worth of meow's...

While we were out Saturday, shopping for cat food, a dog caught her and the end result was a broken back and a lot of pain. We all cried as we gathered her up and took her to the only vet in town that would wait for us. He understood what we needed...

One little shot and to sleep forever...

We will miss our little Raggedy Cat and her Big Loud Meow.

Let me start with a sigh and a smile. The beginning of October had be busy finishing several projects to get ready for the Downtown Art Walk. I love setting my faeries up in our towns historic Train Depot. I meet so many wonderful people at the walks and Last Friday's was no exception! I took my Mom and two daughters with me... they had such a fantastic time and can hardly wait for the next Walk in December... you'd think I'll have time to get ready for it don't you... just wait and see, I'll be running here and there trying to finish everything at the same time.

My beautiful faerie shoppe van is in the shop... another sigh... let's just say college freshman on her way to school HITS a seemingly wimpy but deceivingly strong sign and causes $4,000 damage to my new van.... eeep, I'm gonna weep all over again... The girl was upset and covered in shattered glass, but not hurt, anyway... she feels that the sign, which is still standing, mocks her everytime she now drives by....heeheehee....

a tiny memory...

These roses are blooming today, after an untimely frost killed all my other roses flowerbuds. These are old roses, though, from my grandmother. She gave me these rose bushes a few years ago when I settled into my own home.

The blooms are delicate and beautiful, like life itsself. But also strong. Strong enough to fight the bitter cold on the darkest of nights, like Mamaw, like I hope I am...

These are my favorite roses, these old tyme ones. Though they bloom only once per year, like a special moment shared with a loved one. When they are gone they leave a fragrant memory... until next spring, when we shall meet again...

My grandmother passed away last February, and these roses, her roses, her mother's roses, gave me that small memory of the day I was at her home and we dug them and placed them in a bucket for me to bring to my home. It was a beautiful day and they were blooming then...

They also bring to mind my childhood, being at Mamaw's and the roses blooming by the side of her home, the scent delightful...

...and that's a little story of some pink roses blooming in the spring...

This is the latest doll I finished for an auction last week. He Sold! YAY!

Right now I'm working on my real life doll, my daughter is going to Prom Saturday and I'm dressing her in a beautiful gown... but that chiffon is darn hard to stitch.... EEEEEK!

Oh and their Prom theme is Masquerade. We finished her mask over the weekend... Oh I'll try and get pix of that up to show to ya.

Well, I will start off with the sad news of why I've been absent these past two weeks. My Grandma passed away on Saturday, Feb 10th. My brother and I had taken our mother to be with grandma on the 9th. We spent the night as we knew the end was near. My Grandmother was surrounded by all her loved ones and passed away in her home. She was a good grandma, a hard worker all her life, and lifelong "tomboy" who loved hunting, fishing and gardening. I will miss her but will always be glad to have known her.

Okay, on to the work table gathering of materials!

I'm working on several projects, because some of them have to sit on the table a while to figure out what they want to be... and some just to let the clay dry!

The baby faerie below is a spring theme doll, I think she'll be holding a little bunny, maybe a chick... The weather has been soooooo nice this week it's inspiring some warm and bright creations. So here the little lady sits waiting to get her legs finished a new dress and her furry friend to hold in her hands.

Here is the mosaic doll, hands and arms getting an update....

There is one of her hands in detail below. needle sculpted cloth... they will eventually be painted.

I had a few moments on Saturday to add ears to my mosaic doll...

Benjamin created a little snowman. He really had a great time, even though I'd only let him for a tiny amount of time, because he's just getting better from having bronchitis... yucky stuff for an eleven year old! We didn't have much snow, just enough for a 30 inch snowguy...

Work In Progress... sculpting

This is just before I started the face sculpt. I've painted on a coat of gesso.

Here is the face finished, creative paperclay. I did use a press mold, but the face was too small and I had to stretch and add tons more clay. So I think she has still ended up being very original.

And a full view just so you can see what's up so far. I am enjoying the making of this doll so much! I hope you enjoy her too... stay tuned.

I have been working on the body of the doll today. Sealer has been applied to the tile and grout already. boring...

She's cloth on a wooden base that I did a mosaic on the inside of the body, which will eventually house a tiny doll.

I finished gluing the tiles in last night. Mixed and added the grout to it this morning.... so It's not finished yet, and not supposed to seal it for at least 10 days. But I can work on the doll's body in the meantime.

Here's a sneak peek of the guy I'm working on right now.... he's either gonna be Santa or a Wizard... or maybe a Magical Santa Wizard... We'll see!

He has a partial face mask, nose and forehead/eyelids, because he'll have a beard and mustache to cover the bottom half of his face. Oh and lots of needle-sculpting too...

I have finally emerged from a new book, my copy of "The Art of Wendy Froud"... It is absolutely breath taking, it's full of so many gorgeous dolls...

It's amazing to me, a doll maker myself, how different the lives doll artists lead. And yet we are the same in that we "communicate" with our work, our dolls, or rather they commune with us and take on a personality of their own. Each doll captures a part of the doll maker's spirit, or soul, and mood at the time of creation. Wendy says that is why she never makes a doll when she's angry... That's the same reason why I don't make a doll when I'm in a horrible mood, it just wouldn't feel right to subject a piece of mine in such a negative light.

I don't like to spread hate or anger into the world with my art...

I like my dolls to invoke happiness in the onlooker and create or remind us of happy memories.

Just a few thoughts....

Fall Classes Starting at the Doll House!

Hi Doll Makers!
The doll House is gettin' in gear again for Fall Classes! Come on by and get the Flower Faeries one more time before it's retired, and also the Brownie's class... All are online workshops at Paula's Doll House Workshop!

I have lowered my class prices because I want you, everyone, to be able to take a class with me! I still have full quality classes! Full Of Lots of Information...

I am now a member of the Arkansas Craft Guild. YAY! They already have my dolls in the gallery at Mountain View... If you've never been to this quaint town, you should go, just to listen to the music!

I have also been busy getting a enough Faeries made for a table display at the Downtown Art Walk here in my little town on Friday. So, I must get back to work... I'd love to hear from you, so comment and let me know what you're up too....

Good Morning! I've been really busy with doll making lately and thought I just pop in here and say Howdy!!! I've also been helping my children get things ready for school, they only have one more week of Summer Vacation then it's back to the books for them...

As for me, I'm waiting for the Arkansas Craft Guild to jury my five dolls that I took to them in July, This is scheduled to go on August 15th. I'm a little anxious to know what their decision is! But I'm busy making lots of faeries for the Russellville Downtown Art Walk, Yes I got accepted for that! It's only a three hour thing so I hope it goes well...

Not until the 15th...

Well, I have to wait until the 15th for the jury to their thing with my art, then I'll have to wait for them to notify me by mail.... which they say is up to two weeks later. So It may be September before I know anything.

I took my dolls to the guild's gallery in July, and had the chance to unbox them and set them up myself, another perk to taking them myself instead of mailing them... Mountain View is a music town and you can just go to the town square, pull up a piece of lawn and have a seat and listen to some of the best homegrown bluegrass anywhere! And there are a few art galleries around the square there too... for eye candy.

The lady at the gallery really liked my work, sorry I cannot remember your name, so YAY! maybe the artist jury members will too! Still keepin' my fingers crossed!!!

Arkansas Craft Guild

I'm going to try for membership into one of the most prestigious guild for artists and craftpersons in the state, the Arkansas Craft Guild. I have to take five of my dolls in and they will be juried by 7 artist members.... EEeeeek! I have to say this makes me a little anxious. But I'm confident and it doesn't hurt to keep your fingers crossed.... I'm taking the dolls pictured below... Wish me luck!

I took my mom to Eureka Springs, AR for Mom's Day.... we had a WONDERFUL time!

The town is full of artists of all types, mediums and styles and there are galleries everywhere! Above is a a view of Spring Street.

There's mom at the Christ of the Ozark's statue.

I can't remember how tall the statue is (something like 7 story's tall) but the hand alone is 10 feet long! A breathtaking tribute to Christ!!!

I started this doll March 17th. Here is the doll body with arms seperated for now for costuming purposes. Fabrics for the costume and a drawing for the face I want to do on the doll...

Then my son had an accident, poked his eye - just an accident that turned into an ER visit and several days of nervousness on my part, worrying about his eye and administering many drops several times a day.

BUT all is well now and he can see just a perfectly as before the accident! YAY! So I didn't even think of getting back to dollmaking until he was better!

Here I have sewn the underskirt in place, I love this sheer, sparkling fabric in shades of brown and purple...

I have added the over skirt, green crinkle fabric. the caramel brown crinkle top and short corset in the green fabric of the overskirt.

I "melt" all the edges of the fabrics with a candle.

Looks very faerie-like...

Close-up view of the top and corset. I've tied a decorative fiber yarn around her waist. I use this fiber all over the costume to tie it all together.

Now to add the arms... see below!

I have used the caramel brown crinkle fabric, used in the top, here for the sleeves.

Notice the fiber yarn wrapped around and around her upper arms.
Now the arms are ready to be attached to the body.

I'm using strong button thread to stitch the arms in place.

The sleeves have been gathered and stitched in place at the shoulders. The costume is finshed.

Stay tuned for the finished piece! I've done her hair and am now working on her face and she may even get wings soon!

Dollstreet Challenge

Mardi Gras Theme:

I have a good start on my doll for the mardi gras challenge. I love this theme! found some fantastic fabric at the "Resale Store" (it was a skirt and jacket - the harlequin pattern fabric in photos) and so far it's looking good!

Her legs are made from a vintage swiss dot taffetta type fabric, cream color dots on white.

Faun's & Faeries

This is the newest faerie to come to the Doll House... I had a lot of fun detailing her costume. She's 12 1/2" tall, cloth doll, tibetan mohair, silk dress fabrics, seed beads, etc....

I have finished the baby "pixie"... which actually became a young faun complete with tiny paperclay horns and little fuzzy tail! I made the beady dragonfly on his hand, it's a pin so you may wear it on your clothing... Faun is 10" tall from his seat to top of head...

Here's a little update on the baby pixie I'm working on...

I gave him a haircut lastnight and his face was put on this morning, I use tan dye to tone down/mute the colors on his legs. More later!

It's been a long hot summer! I've made several new dolls and am working on another online class about those tiny house elf-ish beings called Brownies.

There's one now... I call him Hershie Pickwittle.

We just stayed home this summer, no far away vacations for us. Nope, what with all the money it takes to drive anywhere (gas prices, you know) we just couldn't afford a vacation! So I spent most of the summer creating faeries, gnomes, pixies and brownies to fill the Doll House with... some have moved on to new homes, but a few are hanging around for Christmas...
